Drone Flying or Not

June 6, 2021

Our normal routine on business, family, child, senior, and real estate photography continue to keep us busy during these warm summerlike days.  I was asked to take photos of a house near Greers Ferry Arkansas last week.  My son who is a school teacher wanted to go and keep me company.  His presence was appreciated as we rolled over the beautiful hills of north-central Arkansas. He is the 8th-grade social studies teacher at a catholic school in metropolitan Little Rock so he is not lacking in opinion or volume of thought.  The client had requested some drone photos so I made sure we got there a little early to get those out of the way. I like to get those done first and out of way without too many people watching.  Sure enough, the drone would not take off.  We were definitely out in the country far away from any infrastructure however we had ended up in a "no-fly zone". The government restricts certain areas as "no-fly" zones mainly around airports, military installations, and schools.  Since I was out in the countryside I didn't check with my FAA app that can show me where the "no-fly" zones are located.  So when it came time for taking off usually a very dramatic "whoosh" as the drone ascends through the trees and beyond there was nothing except a lot of blinking lights.  When the drone detects its location using the GPS it won't even take off if in a "no-fly" zone.
